Career Options
Most orthopedic surgeons work in hospitals or clinics, but some work in medical education, medical law, medical journalism, some even become consultants. Some surgeons have their own private practice and others work for a company. Only an estimated three percent of orthopedic surgeons work outside of health care, most of the time it is because of malpractice. There are plenty or job openings for surgeons in the U.S. it is predicted that the number of surgeons needed is going to rise by 24% by 2020. Lots of job opportunities are in rural and low income areas.
